Arts and Humanities for Health and WellBeing

Vision & Rationale

  • to develop a local, national and international reputation for excellence in AHHW-related research, knowledge translation and practical application of research results
  • to engage in and develop a model of practice that is inclusive of, and directly beneficial to, the greater community, and to provide leadership in this model

Nationally and internationally, scholars are beginning to engage concertedly in research that demonstrates and utilizes positive links between the arts and humanities, and human health and wellbeing. In Canada and elsewhere, academic departments, as well as interdisciplinary organizations, have been established to explore this phenomenon and apply it in healthcare and/or community. Models vary; for example, some draw specifically from fine arts, some focus on health care education. We hope to build upon such models through inclusion of arts and humanities in the broadest sense, and through the integration of academic and community dialogue.
